Unix Accounts Policy

[Notice:  The Unix accounts policies are under revision at this time.  Consult Martin Ewing for latest information. 1/11/01]

BACKGROUND

Since most of the users of the EIT Unix (Linux) facilities are graduate students and faculty who are conducting sponsored research, this policy was designed to fairly spread the cost of supporting these facilities.  Students, instructors and TA's who need these facilities for teaching purposes will be funded by the EIT budget.

The Windows NT facilities in the Garage are available free of charge for any Yale academic use.  These are supported by ITS and Engineering GA funds because they are predominantly used by undergraduates and others for instructional purposes.

There are currently two service categories for Engineering Unix.  This policy is re-evaluated from time to time.

STANDARD SERVICE ("Small")

  • Moderate disk quota - 100 MB.
  • Logon privilege to one workstation or one server at a time.
  • Unlimited interactive (non-CPU-bound) use.
  • Limited non-interactive (batch) use. Maximum of 10 hours of non-interactive CPU time per week.

PREMIUM SERVICE ("Large")

  • Larger disk quota - 200 MB - with increases on request, up to available disk capacity. (User groups may purchase additional hard disks, at market price, to be installed on server computer.)
  • Multiple system simultaneous logon (parallel computing style) is permitted when coordinated with the Engineering IT Office.
  • Unlimited interactive and batch use, subject to "fair use" regulation by the Engineering IT Office.

TERMS OF AVAILABILITY:

USER CATEGORY STANDARD SERVICE PREMIUM SERVICE
Undergraduates no cost special arrangement
Graduate, unsponsored no cost special arrangement
Graduate, sponsored $100 / 6 months $200 / 6 months
Faculty, postdocs, visitors, staff, summer employees, etc. $100 / 6 months $200 / 6 months
Faculty or TA, instructional use no cost --

An "unsponsored" graduate student is one who does not have a sponsored research or job affiliation. Normally this is a first-year student.

We presume that sponsored graduate students, faculty, postdocs, etc. all have the ability to pay for computing services. In rare cases when this is not true, Engineering IT may choose to sponsor their computer usage.

A faculty member or Teaching Assistant who certifies that he/she requires Unix access only for teaching  use may have a standard service account at no charge.

Account charges are by half year (7/1-12/31 and 1/1-6/30) or by full year. This allows for users who are graduating or going on leave. There is no further prorating. Users will normally be asked to renew and re-qualify for a year at a time by about July 1 each year.
